Understanding the working pressure of the refrigerator is essential when operating and maintaining your refrigeration system.
For refrigeration systems, two gauges can be used, i.e. low or high pressure. As a low pressure refrigeration system, R134a is used in most domestic refrigerators because it is very efficient and convenient for high temperature applications.
R134a is a popular refrigerant used in many modern refrigeration and air conditioning applications. Most refrigerators manufactured after 1995 typically use an R134a refrigerator.
Unlike traditional refrigerators, R134a is compatible and efficient at medium to high temperatures. R134a is non-toxic and non-flammable at room temperature.
It does not corrode metals such as aluminum, copper or steel. The operating pressure of the R134a refrigerator is generally influenced by temperature type variables.
Pressure and temperature in the refrigerator
Like other refrigerators, the pressure of R134a is equal to the temperature. In R134a, pressure can be determined at any temperature from -22 to 202 degrees Fahrenheit.
This can be done by reading the pressure-temperature chart in the refrigerator. Refrigerators using R134a refrigerators are designed to operate in moderate and high temperatures.
Therefore, they are also suitable for places like the kitchen where the ambient temperature is usually high.
Pressure changes with temperature change
At low temperatures, the operating pressure of the coil should be 22 pounds per square inch. Speaking of temperature, the minimum is 45 minus 20, which is 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
Likewise, the coil should operate at a maximum temperature of 57 pounds per square inch or 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If the ambient temperature rises or falls below normal, the pressure will change accordingly.
The temperature difference varies depending on the type of refrigerator. When the temperature in the refrigerator is high, the coil temperature in R134a is generally lower than in the refrigerator.
For example, if the refrigerator temperature is between 45 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, the coil temperature will be between 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
This difference between the temperature of the battery and the temperature of the refrigerator is called the temperature difference.
Low and high lateral pressure
R134a is a gas or a liquid throughout the refrigeration cycle. The most efficient way to charge the compressor is to use liquid R134a on top and gas on bottom. The low side pressure is ideal for charging a refrigerator. Additionally, it can be useful to diagnose your A / C system with normal pressure readings.

As seen above, operating pressure for an R134a refrigeration system is measured in pounds per square inch. At low temperatures, normal operating pressure for the coil should be 22 pounds per square inch.
At higher temperatures, the coil is operated at 57 pounds per square inch. Therefore, a normal pressure reading on an R134a would be 22 to 57 pounds per square inch.
Gauges above or below normal working pressure may indicate a system with a heavy load.
However, when the refrigerator compressor starts to run, the pressure may feel higher than normal. But after a few minutes of operation, the pressure should return to normal. If you think this is too much, your refrigerator’s cooling system will be overloaded.
